In these uncertain times regarding matters of health, we have seen an uptick in questions and requests for documents regarding estate planning and administration services including wills & trusts, asset protection, and business succession.

The McCollum Firm has been helping individuals, businesses, and churches draft these documents for decades.

Simply stated, a will is a personal written document directing how a person’s assets (and dependents) are dispersed after death. Age is not a factor because these situations can, unfortunately, occur at any time.

why should you have a will?

  1. Depending on where you live, you may already have a will, the will of the state that you live in.
  2. Many states (including Maryland) have a default will for all citizens who have not created a personalized will.
  3. These laws are absolute, barring your beneficiaries from challenging the State’s decision regarding how a person’s assets will be distributed.
  4. A properly designed will gives you complete control over the process, which will allow you to allocate the assets of your estate as you see.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Before you can complete your will, you will need to collect the following information:

  • Your name, DOB, and full address
  • The name(s) address, and phone number for the person(s) you will designate as your primary and secondary health choice agent (you can also provide and third choice backup agent).
  • Your treatment preferences
  • Your in-case-of death preferences
